Southern Appalachians seasonal guess, tuned a bit for this water type. Stage tips from the insect notes. Beat-specific lists still need a check against NCWRC / VA DWR.

  • Winter (Jan–Mar)Midges; BWO; Early Black Stones; Blue Quill; Quill Gordon late Mar.
  • Spring (Apr–May)Hendrickson, March Brown, Quill Gordon; Grannom → Hydropsyche (pupa key); Sulphurs evening; Light Cahill; Giant Stones; BWO.
  • Early summer (Jun)Sulphurs, Light Cahill, Yellow Sally, Green Sedge, first terrestrials.
  • High summer (Jul–Aug)Terrestrials; Yellow Sally / Golden Stones; Tricos on slower water if present. Ethics critical.
  • Fall (Sep–Dec)Terrestrials taper; Light Cahill dusk; midges + BWO; Early Black Stones; October Caddis.

Gap: No Wilson-specific hatch list. Species mix / special-reg splits not in sources.

Temp & time of day

Thermometer-first. Stage at 02140510 for “is it in flood / unwadable,” not for °F. High stage = safety suppress.

Access

Wild & Scenic public corridor — stay on signed public access. Confirm NCWRC trout-water designation for the reach you mean. High water (stage spike) is a safety suppress, not a “good fishing” cue.

Conservative one-liner only. No parking spots, crossings, or trespass workarounds.

Ethics: No NC statewide hoot-owl. Soft hold in the upper 60s. Stage-only gage cannot clear thermal ethics — thermometer required. Summer: candidate to reroute toward TW / spring / higher, colder water.
