Plecoptera · Perlodidae (Isoperla and allies)

Yellow Sally

The SE freestone summer stonefly signature. Little yellow adults near banks — and nymphs year-round under rocks. Not a midstream emerger show.

Taxa: Isoperla spp. (Yellow Sally); Golden Stones nearby in summer talk

Bait lens

Yellow Sallies active along banks + fish eating = classic SE summer go — watch water temp ethics.

Life stages

Incomplete metamorphosis: egg → nymph → adult. Stoneflies usually crawl out to banks to emerge (no midstream emerger stage like mayflies).

Nymph — Year-round under rocks; USGS WV stonefly nymph (PD).
Adult — Bank adults — Yellow Sally / golden stone silhouettes.

When it matters in the Southern Apps (NC–VA)

Jun into Jul–Aug on freestones. Spring-creek cards (Mossy) should not lead with Yellow Sally unless QA adds them. Pair with terrestrials in high summer.

Matching artificials & techniques

Mimic the stage the fish are eating — size and silhouette first. Patterns are common SE shop language, not a brand list.

Nymph

Yellow Sally nymph, golden stone nymph, Pat’s Rubber Legs (smaller)

Dead-drift under rocks and along seams year-round.

Adult

Yellow Stimulator, Yellow Sally dry, soft hackle yellow

Near banks and overhanging cover; skate lightly at times.

Sources: Plecoptera life history (egg–nymph–adult, crawl-out). Stage photos: Coming soon until Isoperla-confirmed imagery (prior adult file was a nymph). Regional note: Taxonomy and stage language follow standard aquatic entomology (Ephemeroptera / Trichoptera / Plecoptera / Chironomidae). SE timing is a regional prior from the hatch calendar — confirm with thermometer, seine, and local shop/agency charts.
