Insects by season

Southern Appalachians seasonal guess, tuned a bit for this water type. Stage tips from the insect notes. Beat-specific lists still need a check against NCWRC / VA DWR.

  • Winter (Jan–Mar)Midges; BWO; Early Black Stones.
  • Spring (Apr–May)SE mayfly/caddis suite. Caddis pupa before dries. TW spring can run ~3–4 weeks ahead.
  • Early summer (Jun)Sulphurs, Light Cahill, Yellow Sally, Green Sedge, first terrestrials — treat Yellow Sally as possible until NCWRC QA.
  • High summer (Jul–Aug)Midges on TW; Tricos morning on flats; terrestrials; Yellow Sally / Golden Stones. Ethics critical.
  • Fall (Sep–Dec)Terrestrials taper; Light Cahill dusk; midges + BWO; October Caddis; Early Black Stones.

Gap: No Tuck-specific hatch list. DH date window TBD vs NCWRC. Final gage bind 03510577 vs 03513000 not decided.

Temp & time of day

Thermometer-first (no source-confirmed temp gage). Generation pulse overrides hatch-hour tips.

Access

NCWRC Delayed Harvest / trout-water rules — confirm current regs and which reaches are DH. Duke generation is a wading-safety issue. Public / signed access only.

Conservative one-liner only. No parking spots, crossings, or trespass workarounds.

Ethics: No NC statewide hoot-owl. Soft hold in the upper 60s. Flow gages are not a thermal all-clear. Thermometer required. Never invent a closure.
Sample / not live

Live USGS readouts aren’t wired yet. Use the linked gage pages and a thermometer. This box is just showing the shape — not live data.
