  • Winter (Jan–Mar)Midges; BWO; Early Black Stones.
  • Spring (Apr–May)SE mayfly/caddis suite. Caddis pupa before dries. TW spring can run ~3–4 weeks ahead.
  • Early summer (Jun)Sulphurs, Light Cahill, first terrestrials. Yellow Sally possible on edges.
  • High summer (Jul–Aug)Midges on TW; Tricos morning on flats; terrestrials. Ethics critical if releases warm.
  • Fall (Sep–Dec)Midges + BWO; Light Cahill dusk; October Caddis; Early Black Stones. Brown spawn season — avoid redds.

Temp & time of day

Feeding core ~50–65 °F. Midge film in cold water. BWO on overcast. Tricos morning. Sulphurs afternoon–evening. Browns: extra weight on dawn/dusk. Generation = safety/fishability, not a hatch switch.

Stay on public / posted access; confirm current VA DWR waterbody regs. Call Philpott generation before wading — rising water is a safety issue.
