Insects by season
Southern Appalachians seasonal guess, tuned a bit for this water type. Stage tips from the insect notes. Beat-specific lists still need a check against NCWRC / VA DWR.
- Winter (Jan–Mar)Midges; BWO; Early Black Stones.
- Spring (Apr–May)SE mayfly/caddis suite. Caddis pupa before dries. TW spring can run ~3–4 weeks ahead.
- Early summer (Jun)Sulphurs, Light Cahill, first terrestrials. Yellow Sally possible on edges.
- High summer (Jul–Aug)Midges on TW; Tricos morning on flats; terrestrials. Ethics critical if releases warm.
- Fall (Sep–Dec)Midges + BWO; Light Cahill dusk; October Caddis; Early Black Stones. Brown spawn season — avoid redds.
Gap: No Smith-specific insect list; exact DH/special-reg text not transcribed — QA vs VA DWR page.
