Insects by season

Southern Appalachians seasonal guess, tuned a bit for this water type. Stage tips from the insect notes. Beat-specific lists still need a check against NCWRC / VA DWR.

• Winter (Jan–Mar)Midges (TW backbone); BWO; Early Black Stones.
• Spring (Apr–May)SE mayfly/caddis suite (Hendrickson, March Brown, Quill Gordon, Grannom → Hydropsyche, Sulphurs evening, Light Cahill, Giant Stones) with possible earlier onset (~3–4 weeks ahead). Caddis pupa often before the dry.
• Early summer (Jun)Sulphurs, Light Cahill, first terrestrials along banks. Yellow Sally possible, not Mossy-style primary.
• High summer (Jul–Aug)Midges on TW; Tricos morning on flats; terrestrials as bank food. Ethics still in force if water warms.
• Fall (Sep–Dec)Midges + BWO return; Light Cahill dusk; October Caddis; Early Black Stones.

Temp & time of day

Feeding core ~50–65 °F. Midge film whenever water is fishable and cold. BWO on cloud. Tricos morning. Sulphurs afternoon–evening. Generation pulse is a safety/fishability gate, not a hatch trigger.
