Insects by season

Southern Appalachians seasonal guess, tuned a bit for this water type. Stage tips from the insect notes. Beat-specific lists still need a check against NCWRC / VA DWR.

  • Winter (Jan–Mar)Midges (larva → pupa in film → adult); BWO (nymph → emerger/dun → spinner); Early Black Stones (nymph → bank adult); Blue Quill; Quill Gordon late Mar.
  • Spring (Apr–May)Hendrickson, March Brown, Quill Gordon; Black/Mottled Caddis then Grannom → Hydropsyche (pupa often first); Sulphurs evening; Light Cahill; Giant Stones; BWO continues.
  • Early summer (Jun)Sulphurs, Light Cahill; Yellow Sally (nymph → bank adult); Green Sedge; first terrestrials (bank food).
  • High summer (Jul–Aug)Terrestrials; Yellow Sally / Golden Stones; Tricos morning on slower flats; midges as backup. Ethics critical on this freestone.
  • Fall (Sep–Dec)Terrestrials taper; Light Cahill dusk; midges + BWO return; Early Black Stones; October Caddis.

Temp & time of day

Feeding core ~50–65 °F. BWO watch ~46–56 °F, often overcast. Caddis ~55–56 °F. Sulphurs afternoon–evening. Tricos morning if flats produce. Summer: cool mornings/evenings. Winter: midday warming + midge/BWO film.

Access

NCWRC catch-and-release, artificial lures. Public Pisgah corridor — stay on signed public water and posted access. Confirm current NCWRC regs before fishing.

Conservative one-liner only. No parking spots, crossings, or trespass workarounds.

Ethics: No NC statewide hoot-owl in sources. Soft hold in the upper 60s. Thermometer prompt on warm days. Route truly hot summer days to tailwater / spring / high elevation. Never invent a closure.
