  • Winter (Jan–Mar)BWO; Midges as regional winter backbone.
  • Spring (Apr–May)Sulphur (afternoon–evening watch); BWO continues on suitable temps/cloud.
  • Early summer (Jun)Sulphur continuing; then terrestrials. Do not lead with Yellow Sally / Giant Stones / Quill Gordon unless VA DWR QA adds them.
  • High summer (Jul–Aug)Tricos morning on flats; then terrestrials (bank food — respect no-wade rule). Midges as backup.
  • Fall (Sep–Dec)BWO + midges return; terrestrials taper. October Caddis / Light Cahill are regional priors, not Mossy-confirmed — TBD.

Temp & time of day

Thermometer-first (ungaged). BWO ~46–56 °F, often overcast. Sulphurs afternoon–evening. Tricos morning. Product should never imply stepping in.

Fly only. Landowner permit required. No wading (sources). Private-land access — do not publish unofficial entry points. Confirm current VA DWR waterbody page + landowner rules.

Conservative one-liner only. No parking spots, crossings, or trespass workarounds.

Ethics: VA DWR: comfortable ≤68 °F; soft hold in the upper 60s. Spring creeks are more buffered than freestones, but do not claim “always cold enough.” Sensitive, permitted fishery — do not gamify crowding.
