The idea
Why we talk about windows
You don’t need another raw cfs ticker. You need hours and reaches where bugs are available, trout will eat, and the water is fishable and ethical — with the confidence grade in plain sight.
Three things that have to line up
The useful product is ranking places and hours where these three agree:
- Bugs / prey available — insects in a vulnerable stage (nymph or pupa drift → emerger → dun/adult → spinner), or terrestrials along the bank. Hand-picked calendars in v1; smarter live adjust later.
- Trout will eat — metabolism tracks water temperature. Research core sits roughly around 50–65 °F (10–18 °C), with species differences.
- Fishable and ethical — flow/stage for wading and clarity; hard stops when water is too warm or unsafe. We won’t recommend fishing stressed fish.
Hatch notes change tactics and surface odds. They do not override bad temp or flow.
Warm water — go easy
Our rule: soft ethics hold in the upper 60s; thermometer prompt when it’s hot; steer summer toward tailwater, spring creek, or high elevation; never invent a hoot-owl or agency closure.
How close is the gage?
Nearest gage isn’t always the right gage. Every beat gets a simple grade:
- A — temp + flow measured on this water
- B — nearby mainstem temp
- C — flow only
- D — air-to-water guess / ungaged
A thermometer in your pocket beats a distant gage. Ungaged beats (Mossy, Whitetop, Rapidan) stay on the list with manual temp — low confidence, never fake live numbers.
This version vs what’s next
v1 (this site)
- SE hatch calendar
- Featured beats with hand-bound gages or TBD
- Static temp bands + time-of-day tips
- Clear grade for how close the data is
- Soft warm-water warnings
Later
- Feeding, flow, and surface scores
- Live USGS overlays
- “Fish here / fish now” ranking
- Hard temp and safety shutoffs
- Still not: barometer/moon as headline predictors
How we’re different
TroutRoutes and RiverApp answer what is cfs or temperature now. TroutWindow answers where and when you should fish, what’s likely hatching, and whether trout are likely eating — with the confidence grade showing.
Drawn from internal product notes, trout-feeding research (2026-09-12), regional starter pack thermal/ethics section, and draft hatch cards. Anything beyond those docs needs a founder check.
