Ephemeroptera · Baetidae

Blue-Winged Olive

Small olive mayflies that keep showing up when the water is cool and the sky is soft. When BWOs are on, trout often key on emergers and duns in the film — not just the pretty adult.

Taxa: Baetis spp. (and close olive baetids)

Bait lens

Native Baetis active + fish feeding in the film = go. Don’t wait for a perfect dun hatch if emergers are already getting eaten.

Life stages

Incomplete metamorphosis with a subimago: egg → nymph (many molts) → dun (subimago) → spinner (imago). No pupa. Baetis nymphs are agile swimmers; adults are typically olive/gray with slate wings.

Nymph — Year-round drift food; fish tight to the bottom and in soft seams before a rise starts.
Emerger / film — Often the meal trout want — hang in the film, soft takes.
Dun (subimago) — Olive body, gray/blue wing — classic BWO silhouette on the surface.
Spinner (imago) — Spent wings flat; late-day or cloudy falls can outfish the dun hatch.

When it matters in the Southern Apps (NC–VA)

Watch band roughly 46–56 °F. Strong Jan–Mar and Oct–Dec presence on freestones and spring creeks; continues in shoulder seasons. Often better on overcast / drizzle than bright sun. Tailwaters can keep a midge/BWO program going when freestones are quiet.

Matching artificials & techniques

Mimic the stage the fish are eating — size and silhouette first. Patterns are common SE shop language, not a brand list.

Nymph

Pheasant Tail (#16–20), Soft Hackle PT, Beadhead Baetis

Dead-drift nymphs under an indicator or tight-line; swing the soft hackle through the film when fish are looking up.

Emerger

RS2, Barr’s Emerger, CDC Baetis Emerger, Film Critic

Fish in or just under the film. Grease the leader tip if takes are subtle.

Dun

BWO Comparadun / Sparkle Dun, Parachute Adams (olive), CDC dun

Match size first (#18–22 common). Present slack-leader drifts over rising fish.

Spinner

Rusty Spinner, BWO Spinner, spent Comparadun

Look for spent wings in slicks. Evening or post-hatch soft water.

SE timing is a regional prior from the hatch calendar — confirm with thermometer, seine, and local shop/agency charts.
