About TroutWindow

Regional hatch maps first. Then, honestly, toward weather and USGS scoring. This version is hand-picked and regional — we’re not pretending to cover the whole country.

The idea

TroutWindow (troutwindow.com) helps you figure out where and when to fish in North Carolina and Virginia: hatch notes, a short list of beats, and how much to trust the nearest gage.

Matching the hatch and showing up when fish are eating depends on place and conditions. That knowledge is scattered. Public flow and temp data exist, but they aren’t usually married to bug and fish behavior in one place. We start with the Southern Appalachians launch set.

Incubated quietly at Eveleth Labs.

What ships in v1

In

  • SE hatch calendar with stage language
  • 10 featured beats with real gage binds or TBD
  • Grades A–D for how close the data is
  • Static temp bands and time-of-day tips
  • Thermal ethics: soft hold upper 60s; never invent hoot-owl

Not in v1

  • Live “fish now” AI scoring (that’s later)
  • Guaranteed hatch clock times
  • Barometer / moon as headline predictors
  • National coverage of ungaged freestones
  • Invented USGS IDs or closures

Ethics

Warm water: VA DWR comfortable ≤68 °F; stress in the mid–upper 60s; ~70 °F is rough on trout health; brookies prefer <65 °F. NC: no statewide hoot-owl found in our sources; practitioners and TU flag stress above 68 °F. Our rule: thermometer prompt; soft hold in the upper 60s; send summer toward tailwater, spring creek, or high elevation.

Access notes stay conservative — no parking workarounds, trespass tips, or hole-by-hole pins on sensitive water. Fall spawn: we won’t route you onto active redds.

How we’re different

TroutRoutes and RiverApp answer what is cfs or temperature right now. TroutWindow aims at where you should go, when, what’s likely hatching, and whether trout are likely eating — with the confidence grade visible.
